Second Entry: Problem Solving Method

Well, it started off with an occasional conversation with my dear friend, Sarah. She was relating to me her dilemma in choosing the right university after her A-Levels. I could so easily feel her anxiety and fear, because I have been through that stage. And I must say, I have resolved the dilemma quite successfully.
I reflect upon my situation one year back. After SPM, many of us were very indecisive whether to continue Form 6 or universities. Too many options were available until we were afraid of choosing. I was not excluded from all the “ hoo haa” of the post-SPM syndrome. The dilemma intensified further after I failed to secure JPA Overseas Scholarship.
I expected that I could at least secure one of the scholarships I had applied for. I didn’t bother to apply for other local scholarships or colleges as my aim was to go overseas solely. It didn’t dawn on me the possibility of being rejected. The reality stroked me hard when I was rejected by all.

I began to analyze the problem I was facing. I had never been in such situation. I understood that the decision I was about to make would impact my whole future and determine my path. I knew that despite the huge disappointment I was undergoing, I must pick myself up and choose a road. It frightened me that if I made a slight mistake, I would regret throughout my entire life because I could end up taking an unrecognized degree or etc. I knew first of all I had to know where my interest was.
After heeding some advices from my mentor and my parents, I decided to list down all the possible solutions. I had few laid before me: Matriculation in Pahang, form 6, A-Levels in Taylors College, ACCA in Sunway College, and MMU.
Together with my parents we dissected advantages and disadvantages of each possible solution. While matriculation could help save a substantial amount of money, I did not like the environment because I was not productive under military system ( 8-6 classes and meals on time). Besides, I was offered a science subject, which contradicted with what I wanted. Many advised me not to pursue Form 6 because I would end up graduating later than my peers and it would be a waste. Well, some people came up to convince me that staying near to my parents could be a huge advantage. ACCA was my desired option, as the duration of the course is short and I got to study near Sunway Pyramid! However, my parents encouraged me to think twice because I could be easily influenced by bad practices of the city lifestyle, and it could be stressful to take professional courses. My brother was a graduate from MMU and he aided me in analyzing the pro and cons of going there.
After much consideration and weighing the pros and cons of each solution, we decided to enroll into MMU for a degree program. Despite the long distance from home, MMU courses are recognized by our government, have good reputation and deliver quality education. Thus, I end up here, doing this assignment.
Don’t these steps familiar to you? Yes it is. It is taken from our tutorial material form Critical Thinking.
